Situation

Long queue times in NTUC supermarkets are a pain. So my team prototyped a mobile self-checkout application to solve this issue. I was one of the UX designers that created proof of concepts.

What I did

Before beginning to prototype, my team initially sought to deeply understand the problems space. I conducted contextual inquiry with random NTUC shoppers to understand their pain points with checking out. As a team, we discussed what were must-have features using tools such as affinity diagrams and personas. These are the screens i designed. To ease learning, the design is similar to existing e-ccommerce apps but with NTUC specific features like points and coupons. The flow was strategically placed in a way that is rhythmically similar to already existing self-checkout machines in the store.

Our team eventually started our prototyping sprints, we used the numerous methods shown on the left. We blasted designs to see what stuck and iterated on what worked to slowly approach our final solution.

We did plenty of user tests for feedback. We had users complete a set of tasks and observed their behaviour as carried them out. Taking note of even their slighthest struggles, we could gauge which features were quick and intuitive. Some of our findings and the actions taken as a result are shown below.
